Future Nostalgia with Atiyyah Khan: South African Jazz Special

South African music journalist, DJ, and researcher Atiyyah Khan (El Corazon) digs out gems, past and present. The show is an extension of the music collective she co-founded in Cape Town called Future Nostalgia, which has hosted listening sessions for the past eight years.

This month’s show premiers the new single by Shane Cooper and MABUTA off their sophomore album, due in May. We also hear new music by bassist Herbie Tsoaeli from his album At This Point in Time and drummer Ayanda Sikade from new album Umakhulu. Also featured is a mix titled ‘Black Music Under Apartheid’ made for the National Arts Festival 2020. It engages with the history of how jazz has always been connected to the struggle for freedom in South Africa, with a look at the stringent laws that musicians fought against and tracing the lineage of how the sound developed.
