Gilles Peterson presents ‘Cape Town Sounds’

Gilles Peterson presents ‘Cape Town Sounds’, an audio documentary exploring the music of the city and what makes it unique.

As part of Lufthansa’s City of the Month campaign, Gilles travelled to Cape Town in early February to speak to some key figures of the varied musical movements of the city, including the indigenous music of the Khoisan bushmen, Cape jazz, 80s kwaito, bubblegum pop, hip-hop and spoken word, all the way through to today’s burgeoning electronic music scene.

Gilles and Esa also hosted a Worldwide FM pop-up radio broadcast live from Cape Town, featuring many of the guests from the documentary, which you can listen to below.

Lefto kicks off the day from Belgium with smooth and chilled sounds. Including new music from Henry Wu, Superpoze and Ifan Dafydd.

WW Canada: Toronto special presented by Lexis // 12-4PM GMT


Lexis (Music Is My Sanctuary) is surveying the Canadian scene and alternating between Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver through a series of shows. This time Lexis travels to Toronto to host a few of the city’s most important artists and music heads for a four hour special.

Alexandre Kassin is one of Brazil’s leading producers, having worked as the musical director at the 2016 Rio Paralympics and as a co-producer of Sonzeira. With his musical partner Joao, they present two hours direct from Rio de Janeiro, on the week of carnival.

Thris Tian heads to Bahidora Festival, Mexico. He’ll be capturing exclusive interviews with some of the weekend’s biggest names. Headliners include Mac Miller, Leon Vynehall and Mayer Hawthorne.

Local talent include the likes of Wet Baes, Jubilee, Trillones, Agrupación Cariño, RJD2, Ali Gua Gua, Frente Cumbiero, Systema Solar and Mad Professor.

Channel One Sound System
Channel One is one of the most significant and iconic crews in dub and reggae sound system culture. They joined us in the studio for two hours of education and classics.

Sherwood & Pinch
Two undeniable heavyweights in UK bass music, Adrian Sherwood of On-U Sound Records and Rob Ellis AKA Pinch, present two hours of music ranging from dub to jungle, as well as their new release Man vs. Sofa.
