Oto Nova Album of the month is a compilation “WAMONO A to Z Vol. I – Japanese Jazz Funk & Rare Groove 1968-1980 (Selected by DJ Yoshizawa Dynamite & Chintam)” out from 180g.

    Tune in for Oto Nova Japan, a show introducing a new wave of artists and music coming out of Japan, with Worldwide FM’s senior producer and Gilles Peterson’s longtime radio collaborator, Mari*! She is joined by Hiro Ama, the London based producer and drummer who has released EP “Uncertainty” (PRAH), for a chat and guest mix. The Album of the Month is ‘Snowflakes Are Dancing’ (RCA Red Seal) by Japanese synth pioneer Isao Tomita. This classic album from 1974 is one of the very few Japanese albums celebrated at the electronic music exhibition currently on at Design Museum.

    Tune in for Oto Nova Japan, a show introducing a new wave of artists and music coming out of Japan, with Worldwide FM’s senior producer and Gilles Peterson’s longtime radio collaborator, Mari*! It’s the Independence day of Brasil and also the birthday of Sonny Rollins, an American jazz tenor saxophonist- he is 90 years old today. The theme of October’s show is “Jazz and Rhythms” She is joined by Takuya Kuroda, a highly-respected trumpeter/composer/arranger who has played with José James to DJ Premier. They will chat about his new album “Fly Moon Die Soon” (First Words Records). Album of the month is ‘Venus’ by Logic System. It’s a synth classic by Japanese wizard and YMO programmer Hideki Matsutake, and the album is reissued by Wewantsound outside of Japan for the first time in 40 years.

  • 13.08.20 oto nova Japan 音の波: Mari* with Kaoru Inoue (Chari Chari)

    Tune in for Oto Nova Japan, a show introducing a new wave of artists and music coming out of Japan, with Worldwide FM’s senior producer and Gilles Peterson’s longtime radio collaborator, Mari*! The theme of August’s show is “ether”, where Mari* selects tunes with a tranquil mood. She is joined by Kaoru Inoue, a Tokyo based DJ/Producer active since the 90s and a significant cultivator of the club and electronic music scene in Japan. He is also known by the moniker Chari Chari, his solo electronic music project. His music has been released from numerous labels around the world, however his latest album We hear the last decades dreaming [Seeds and Ground] is his first release in 18 years under Chari Chari! Kaoru Inoue presents a mix based on the new album. Album of the month is Green by Hiroshi Yoshimura, the late Japanese ambient pioneer’s cult classic from 1986. The album is re-issued by Light in the Attic.

    Mari* is Worldwide FM’s Senior Producer and Gilles Peterson’s longtime radio collaborator, and every month presents a two hour show called ‘Oto Nova Japan’ introducing a new wave of artists and music coming out of Japan. On this edition, a guest mix comes from a rising talent of the Japanese underground scene, producer and DJ Pepin who is making his international debut with the release of a full length LP entitled ’85‘ on Chicago’s Star Creature. Pepin has put together ‘Alpha Wave’, a relaxing musical journey to be enjoyed in the morning! From this show, Mari* starts a new feature ‘Oto Nova’s Album of the Month’. This months album of the month is the compilation ‘Island Sounds From Japan 2009-2016‘ from Time Capsule, the London-based re-issue label.

    Mari* is Worldwide FM’s Senior Producer and Gilles Peterson’s longtime radio collaborator, and every month presents a two hour show called ‘Oto Nova Japan’ introducing a new wave of artists and music coming out of Japan. On this edition, Mari* is joined by musician and arranger SATO of VIVA SHERRY from Kyoto. Alongside VIVA SHERRY, she has performed and worked on several arrangements for A Hundred Birds- a 40 piece dance music orchestra. SATO is releasing a digital album called “THE” which she produced during the pandemic by using the mobile app GarageBand and Pro Tools, treating them like toys. On this show for Worldwide FM, SATO recreates the world of “THE” and shares her new music which was inspired by the range of feelings she faced during these difficult period.

On this edition, there are two exclusive live sets prepared by two artists from Japan. The ambient music master Kazuya Nagaya, a Japanese artist who creates immersive ritualized compositions through the use of bronze bells, gongs and singing bowls, shares a live set of his latest album- “dream interpretation live.” Also, Japan’s singer songwriter Kan Sano performs a solo piano piece with some improvisation from his home. .     Mari* is Worldwide FM’s Senior Producer and Gilles Peterson’s longtime radio collaborator, and every month presents a two hour show called ‘Oto Nova Japan’ introducing a new wave of artists and music coming out of Japan. This month’s show includes a guest mix from Becker & Mukai, a Japanese-French duo who have released their first album ‘Time Very Near’ from SaS Recordings this month. Jean-Gabriel Becker is a Parisian cinema composer best known for idiosyncratic soundscapes. Susumu Mukai is a London-based musician who has collaborated with likes of Floating Points, Vanishing Twin, Alexis Taylor and Fimber Bravo. Becker & Mukai select COVID isolation style tunes that inspired the making of their new album.

    Mari* is Worldwide FM’s Senior Producer and Gilles Peterson’s longtime radio collaborator, and every month presents a two hour show called ‘Oto Nova Japan’ introducing a new wave of artists and music coming out of Japan. On the first hour, Ill Japonia, the solo project of Taigen Kawabe, 1/4 of the visceral metal freaks BO NINGEN, joins to chat about the project and performs live. On the second hour of the show, Mari* speaks with OKI, the internationally acclaimed tonkori player. Tonkori are plucked string musical instruments, primarily used by the Ainu people, an indigenous people of Japan. The show features the concert recordings which was held at Japan House London.

    Mari* is Worldwide FM’s Senior Producer and Gilles Peterson’s longtime radio collaborator, and every month presents a two hour show called ‘Oto Nova Japan’ introducing a new wave of artists and music coming out of Japan. On this edition, Mari* is joined by London based producer and DJ Koichi Sakai, who is well-known in London music circles and co-founder of the legendary Afro-beat Vibration nights alongside Dele Sosimi. The show explores his new release and collaboration with Ghanaian percussionist and singer Afla Sackey (Afrik Bawantu), where Koichi mixed African percussion instruments and themes with synths and drum machines. Mari is curious to chat about how he has established his role in the music scene after moving from Japan.   Koichi Sakai  Koichi Sakai is a Tokyo born, London based DJ, producer and musician who is widely recognised for his highly developed, unique style which reflects the varied influences that have continuously informed his creativity and career. His musical style is soulful, jazzy and percussive; playing a distinctive and smooth mix of soul, jazz, funk, reggae, Latin, afrobeat and deep house. Sakai has been the resident DJ for Afrobeat Vibration with the former Fela Kuti’s Egypt 80 keyboardist Dele Sosimi since November 2008 and has a project called Afrobuddha with Kay Suzuki, DJ/Producer and co-founder of reissue label Time Capsule.

Mari* brings piano pieces by Japanese musicians and is joined by Midori Hirano, a Berlin-based musician, composer and producer.

This episode features Jazzy Sport, to celebrate the new collaboration on Worldwide FM of the launch of the Jazzy Sport T-Shirt. Jazzy Sport is an Independent Record label + Shop based in Tokyo Japan, that is home to Mitsu the Beats, Gagle, Cro-Magnon, Grooveman Spot, Budamunk, Sick Team, and more. Mari* will play some of the releases from Jazzy Sport and the show will feature an exclusive mix by DJ Mitsu the Beats. ‘A new Worldwide FM tee collaboration with our Japanese friends Jazzy Sport. 10% of Worldwide FM and Jazzy Sport profits go to an organisation called “change the world“, providing supplies to Japanese earthquake victims, sending rice and necessities from Kumamoto to children at Yotsuba Kindergarden in Minamisōma, Fukushima.’

Hosono takes us back to his musician musical adventures around the world.
