Detroit: Mothership Connection

We are delighted to be sonically visiting and celebrating the city that brought so much to our music landscape here at Worldwide FM as we spend the week celebrating the city of Detroit.

As a city, Detroit has been responsible for key contributors across the whole spectrum of music from Jazz to Hip Hop to Techno and further beyond.

Detroit: Mothership Connection is Worldwide FM paying homage to the Motor City with a week of programming exploring the best that Detroit has given to the world.

Monday:

Sound Signature: 20 yearsTheo Parrish guides us through his iconic label Sound Signature and Gilles Peterson picks his favourite Sound Signature records.

Motown – An hour journey through the legendary Detroit institution Motown.

Tuesday:

Straight No Chaser: Detroit – Legendary magazine figurehead Paul Bradshaw takes a look at the often overlooked Jazz legends of Detroit. He also curates a focus on Strata Records.

Carl Craig: Detroit Love – Detroit Love founder Carl Craig presents his second instalment of his Detroit Love show. Cult Detroit DJ Al Ester is in the mix.

Wednesday:

Norma Jean Bell – Saxophonist and collaborator for Moodymann, Parliament/Funkadelic and Frank Zappa amongst a long list of other Detroit legends. Norma Jean Bell is a often overlooked stalwart of Detroit. We present an hour of her contributions to the Detroit sound.

Thursday:

DJ Gilla and Mr Thing on J Dilla – First Word owner DJ Gilla is joined by Mr Thing for a 2-hour show celebrating one of the greatest hip hop producers of all time, J Dilla. They have a world exclusive J Dilla track to play.

Portage Garage – Shigeto and his brother Benjamin Saginaw present 2 hours of music from Portage Garage, the label they founded in 2017.

Friday:

Amp Fiddler – Amp Fiddler is a Detroit stalwart – a keyboardist, singer-songwriter and record producer, known for his work in Enchantment and his funk and soul productions released on Moodymann‘s Mahogoni. We reloop his show from September 2017.
