Head Sounds: Tostoni

For this episode of Head Sounds, Tostoni digs deep into his Anibal Velásquez's record collection, made up exclusively from works he recorded in Venezuela. Born in Barranquilla in 1938, Velásquez enjoyed great success in Colombia, (where he was known as “El Loco Del Swing” for his unique and daring way of playing the accordion), before moving to Venezuela, where he lived for about 20 years, recording hundreds of albums and singles with big and obscure labels, appearing in numerous TV shows and crisscrossing the “graced land” as he used to call it in one of his songs.

Although, not the typical immigrant himself, Velásquez, usually portrayed in his songs the struggling lives of Colombian immigrants during the ’60-’70s, when political and economical stress, forced hundreds of thousands to cross the border, hoping for a better life. This uninterrupted mix shows his great musicianship and wide range of creative compositions, from traditional cumbia, charanga, vallenato, and guaracha. Enjoy and dance!
