“KAKASHI” by YASUAKI SHIMIZU [PALTO FLATS / WRWTFWW] (2017)
Every morning on Worldwide FM, we play a track from our album of the week. This week’s focus is a rare cult classic from Japan: Kakashi by Yasuaki Shimizu. Originally released in 1982, it has now been reissued by Palto Flats and WRWTFWW, in its first ever pressing outside of Japan.
Kakashi is the fourth solo album by the Japanese composer, producer and saxophonist. While he might be better known as the band leader of experimental synth outfit Mariah, Shimizu’s solo work is a joyful journey through saxophone experimentations and jazz fusion.
Thanks to Palto Flats and WRWTFWW’s collaboration, this isn’t the only Japanese masterpiece brought to our attention recently. Earlier this year, they released pioneer percussionist Midori Takada’s beautiful ambient album Through The Looking Glass.
Check out her interview for Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood Basement show earlier this year.
