“EP1” by Ola Szmidt (2017)
Every morning on Worldwide FM, we play a track from our album of the week. Our pick this week is the hauntingly beautiful ‘Ep1‘ by singer-songwriter and producer Ola Szmidt.
A recipient of the InNOVation Award (run by the Steve Reid Foundation), and mentee of Kieran Hebden AKA Four Tet, Ola is a flautist, vocalist and accomplished improviser.
Taking influence from Eastern folk traditions (her mother tongue is Polish), contemporary classical music, and jazz, she creates in Ep1 raw, soulful and evocative songs. With the help of the loop station (her “most precious notebook and song writing tool”) she also builds intricate and captivating layers of vocal and instrumental harmonies.
Check out Ola’s fantastic live session on Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood Basement show in December 2017. You can also catch her live on 14 February 2017 at Stoke Newington Old Church.
