First broadcast date: 27 February 2017
Gilles Peterson presents the premiere of ‘Cape Town Sounds’, an audio documentary exploring the music of the city and what makes it unique.
As part of Lufthansa’s City of the Month campaign, Gilles travelled to Cape Town in early February, and spent a day skimming the surface of the various musical movements of the city. He heard about the indigenous music of the Khoisan bushmen to Cape jazz, 80s kwaito and bubblegum pop to hip hop and spoken word, all the way through to today’s burgeoning electronic music scene.
In his search, he talks to stalwarts of the local music community including jazz multi-instrumentalist Tony Cedras, spoken word artist Khadija Tracey Heeger, journalist Ntone Edjabe, Donald “Jumbo” Van Renen, Mabu Vinyl record store owner Stephen Segerman, vocalist Nonku Phiri, Professor Adam Haupt and DJ/turntablist DJ Ready D.
