Founded by radio host, music producer, label owner and journalist, Colleen “Cosmo” Murphy, Classic Album Sundays allows listeners to fully immerse themselves into an album by exploring its context, the making of and a full replay of the album on vinyl. This edition focuses on Bob Marley and the Wailers, Burnin’, featuring guest British film director, DJ and musician Don Letts.
Things moved fast in the music business in 1973. Six months after the release of its predecessor, Catch a Fire. Burnin’ was released making it Bob Marley and The Wailers second release for Island Records. This album matches Catch Fire spiritual themes and anthemic style. Songs illuminated the desperation of poor Jamaican life, whilst looking for religious salvation, their themes accentuated by the compelling rhythms and the alternating vocals of the three singers.
In 2007 the album was added to the Library of Congress’ National Recording Registry for its historical and cultural significance.
