Nestled in the heart of Lagos, Jazzhole stands as a revered cultural institution with over 30 years of history. Led by Olakunle Tejuoso and his son Olakunle Junior, Jazzhole has evolved far beyond its origins as a record store, becoming a cornerstone of Lagos’ vibrant art scene.
Specialising in black music that spans African and Afro-diasporic genres, Jazzhole is deeply committed to celebrating and promoting local talent and Nigerian music.
Studio Monkey Shoulder is supporting the production of 2 compilation LPs under Jazzhole's record label, digitising and mastering some unreleased studio recordings from their extensive collection. The LP's feature some prolific Yoruba artists and cover genres like Afro-Funk, Afrobeat, Palm Wine, JuJu, and Highlife.
This project aims to engage new audiences in Nigeria’s diverse musical heritage and hopes to inspire future generations of Nigerian artists and foster artistic innovation, inspiring future generations of Nigerian artists.
Together we hosted two events at Jazzhole with contemporary Nigerian DJs and some live performances with some of the artists featured on the records.
'Great to see such an iconic music institution within Lagos and Nigeria reclaim its own cultural heritage by preserving such an important cultural archive to collaborate with and inspire future generations of young music makers.' Gilles Peterson
