This month GMM welcomes a special guest Alsarah , Born and raised in Sudan, my family immigrated to Yemen, and finally settled in the US in 1994. Facing down the question “where are you from” but unable to synthesise an answer I looked for ways outside of words. With music, I see to answer the intersectional question “where are you from through sound.
I refined that look with studies in Ethnomusicology, writing my senior thesis on the intersection of music and spirituality in the world of Zar. Over the next 15 years since graduating, I practised as a professional musician taking my studies into practice as an Artist. The sounds of Sudan and Nubia have been my anchor since birth and have been the sonic home that I carry with me through my migrations around this globe.
