Haseeb Iqbal: Badal Roy Tribute

This week, DJ and broadcaster Haseeb Iqbal takes over the morning show to help you rise and shine.

Today, Haseeb pays tribute to Badal Roy, the legendary Pakistani tabla player who sadly passed away this week. He was a pivotal part of the American jazz landscape, playing in the bands of Miles Davis and Ornette Coleman from the 1970s onwards, yet has remained largely overlooked throughout his career.

He went on to play on records such as Pharoah Sanders’ Wisdom Through Music and Lonnie Liston Smith’s Astral Travelling, become an entry point for the American jazz heads when it came to South Asian music culture.

He also interviewed him in depth last year for the article he wrote for the Guardian, exploring the history of Pakistani jazz, making this show today even more personal!
