Haseeb Iqbal with Roy Charles

Haseeb is joined by friend and avid dub record collector Roy Charles. The pair discuss Roy’s early years in the Caribbean, inspired by the sounds of calypso before coming over to the UK aged 10.

They speak about his arrival to West London as part of the Windrush generation and trace, in depth, the importance of soundsystem culture in offering a space for young Black people to express theirselves.

Roy offers a unique insight into the significance of figures such as Dennis Bovell, whilst shedding light on certain soundsystem clashes he would go to that would see Coxsone up against Jah Shaka and more. He celebrates the pivotal role of The Metro Club in Notting Hill as being a key spot during the 1970s for some of the most important moments of growth in UK reggae history.

Across the conversation, Roy plays a selection of rare and original dub wax that he has passionately collected across the last 50 years, offering a sonic extension to some of the fascinating stories he tells.
