Head Sounds: Tostoni - Cumbia Rebajada

Cumbia “Rebajada" (slowed) is the favoured way to play Colombian Music records by the Sonideros (sound system' selectors) in Mexican cities like Puebla, Mexico City, and especially in the northern city of Monterrey, where the style was accidentally created after an overheated turntable started to play at lower revolutions. The owner of the turntable didn’t fix the problem and party-goers seem to like more the slow-paced sounds, even demanding the music to be played that way. Not only this helped the Mexican public to understand some of the lyrics, but also to keep them dancing for longer.

In this new Head Sounds, we’ll listen to tracks from El Miramar, Andrés Landero, Los Coqueros, Combo Los Guajiros, Julian Machado, and new acts like Frente Cumbiero, Malphino, and the dub rework of GaiterOs De San Jacinto by Adrian Sherwood, among others, all played with the pitch at minus 5-8% and others 7” singles were played at the “wrong” speed of 33.3 and pitched up to +8.
