Leila Moon and Ines Hayouni presenting: Medahates of Wahran, Algeria

In this show, we share stories and impressions of the cultural treasure of western Algeria: the Medahates. This genre, traditionally performed by women—and occasionally by a few men accepted within private female circles—channels spirituality, pain, and collective experiences through song. The Medahates create a space where emotions, community challenges, and healing are expressed and shared.

The show is hosted by Leila Moon, a DJ based in Switzerland, music producer, and artist with roots in Algeria. Her work explores the intersections of sound, dance, and collective memory.

She is joined by Ines Hayouni, a writer, researcher, and founder of the podcast series Raïtrospective. Ines took part in the Medahates residency organized by Leila Moon in collaboration with El Moutanakil and supported by Pro Helvetia in November 2024
