Kamar presents Tealeaves - exploring sound through migration, seeking to appreciate the multitude of ways that migrants and the movement of people have contributed to global society and cultural richness.
This month, a dedicated Reggae and Dub special, Kamar will start the first hour with special picks across the spectrum of Roots Reggae, Dub, Lovers Rock, Ska and Rocksteady, before being joined by Dub titan Mad Professor, exploring the ways these cornerstones of UK culture have culminated and developed as a result of Caribbean migrant communities.
Mad Professor is one of the leading figures in Dub. Born in Guyana in 1955, and migrating to the UK as a teenager, he is widely credited with being one of the major driving forces behind pioneering Dub production, and owns the UK's longest standing independently black owned label, Ariwa. A disciple of Lee "Scratch" Perry, he has collaborated with reggae acts including the likes of Sly and Robbie, Pato Banton, Jah Shaka and Horace Andy, as well as artists outside the realm of traditional reggae and dub, such as Sade, Massive Attack, The Orb, Gaudi, the Brazilian DJ Marcelinho da Lua, Grace Jones, Jamiroquai and even The Beastie Boys.
