Universal Sanctuary: Echo Juliet with Kaidi Tatham

Dance can be triggered by improvised jazz, classic four to the floor or whatever it is that moves our souls; Universal Sanctuary is the junction between live jazz, electronic music and DJ culture; a place that warmly invites you to lose your inhibitions and open your ears even wider.

A seam of funk runs deep through this month’s selections, an uplifting guest mix from Kaidi Tatham and an interview with prolific producers Sound Support, who you may also know as Lars Dales (Dam Swindle) and Lorenz Rhode. New music comes from Ishmael Ensemble, Athlete Whippet, bassist Isobella Burnham, Melbourne’s Liam de Bruin, and Pakistan-based quartet Jaubi, as well as a dive into new compilation Sun After Rain, the first release from Wah Wah 45s’ new imprint Allison Recordings.

Echo Juliet Echo Juliet is the alias of Emily Jones: a producer, DJ and classically-trained percussionist who has also spent over ten years curating live music, including one of the UK’s biggest jazz festivals. Her music blends hypnotic percussion loops and organic sounds with contemporary beats, creating a melodic feel nestled somewhere between electronic, jazz, soul and classical; think Four Tet, Floating Points and Pantha du Prince. DJ credits include SXSW, Green Man Festival, Love Supreme and Spiritland, as well as a residency with promoter Soundcrash. Emily helps run female and non-binary DJ community Selextorhood, and her work on gender balance in jazz has been featured on Woman’s Hour on BBC Radio 4, Jazz FM and in the Guardian.
