Pedro Coquenão

Angolan Batidas in the 2000s

My name is Pedro Coquenão. I was born in Huambo, Angola and raised in the suburbs of Lisbon, Portugal. I have been creating and interacting with music, dance, visual and radio arts under the name Batida, it means 'beat' in Portuguese and relates to Luanda dance music culture.

In the early 2000’s there were these compilations named batidas, followed by a year or number. There were as many as any person would decide to make and sell out on the streets. They would feature music you could not hear on the radio, but that reflected the most popular artists and producers on the streets. Hits of the moment, one hit wonders and sometimes, stuff that you would only get on that particular CD. From absolutely unique and experimental, to impossible to hear, this period was the most inspiring I can remember. Totally DIY.

Most of them were and are still not available on the web, others you have to dig deep to find them. I decided to dig deep and put them together for you. They go from absolute classics to more recent releases. Most remain under the radar and the stream counts do not reflect how massive they are back in Luanda. All are essential for you to have a grasp of what the unique groove of Luanda is.
