Church of Sound curator Lex Blondin has put together a spicy mix of Afro cuban jazz for this month’s show.
The tunes will have you travel back from a pre-revolutionary Havana to a post war New York, a time when record producers and arrangers were not afraid to think big. A different shade of Bebop Reptilian brass sections, subtle arrangements written by monuments like Mario Bauza, Lalo Schiffrin or Chico O’ Farril, coupled with the musicianship of talented soloists such as Art Blakey, Sabu Martinez, Dizzy Gillespie, Herbie Mann and the likes.
The result is a percussion heavy form of music with which jazz chords and improvisation found a new structure to play around. Four to the floor double bass, swirling trumpet solos, Hard Bop piano chords makes it a delight for Jazz dancers. Beware, this mix is highly explosive, handle with care!
