Worldwide Breakfast: Valentine Comar w/ Natalie Shooter (guest mix)

Breakfast in Beirut - Synth Dreams

Valentine Comar welcomes Natalie Shooter for a special guest mix under the “Breakfast in…” series. Titled “Breakfast in Beirut – Synth Dreams,” the mix is a lush journey through the sticky melodies and hypnotic textures of 1970s–80s Lebanese synth pop, weaving together funk, folk, psychedelia, and slow-mo disco. Dreamy, transportive, and deeply rooted in place, it captures a sonic snapshot of Beirut’s golden musical era.
Natalie Shooter is a DJ, music writer, and researcher, and a co-founder of the Beirut Groove Collective (BGC)—a cult club night that has been running between Beirut and London for over 15 years. At BGC, she and her collaborators spotlight underground clubbing records from 1960s–80s Lebanon, the SWANA region, and beyond, connecting past sounds to present-day dancefloors.

Alongside her DJ work, Natalie has written extensively on music subcultures and scenes across Lebanon and the wider region. She has also contributed to archival reissues and compilations, including the upcoming Une Voix M’Appelle—a collection of modern Lebanese sounds from the legendary Voix de L’Orient label (1967–1984), compiled by Ernesto Chahoud and set to release on Now-Again Records.

As always, Valentine Comar has curated a selection around the guest mix, choosing new and not-so-new music that resonates with its spirit. She’ll be sharing music that reflects this year’s Refugee Week on Air theme: “Community as a Superpower”—celebrating resilience, cultural exchange, and the everyday power of connection through sound.
